The purpose of this project was to learn, use, and help others use power tools and large machines including the CNC machine, 3D printers, LASER cutter, vinyl cutter, and soldering iron. To accomplish this, I made an electronic hour glass.

NEWS FLASH… My attempt to make an electronic hour glass failed due to inadequate skills. In addition, I failed to complete the Maker Quals project based on its purpose.

One takeaway would be to improve my time management. I also could’ve been more diligent, and precise with the use of the soldering iron.

The biggest challenge was incorporating every single maker qual into one project. I failed to add the fabrication qualification and LASER cutting qualification into my project. 5 months later, it is still questionable if it would have been possible to utilize them.

Materials:

  • Piece of MDF for CNC machine
  • Hourglass PCB board and components
  • Batteries

Tools:

  • Hot glue gun
  • Soldering iron
  • Holders for PCB (only for the weak)
  • Solder
  • CNC machine
  • Sandpaper
  • Duck tape if necessary

Steps:

  • Start by completing soldering the hourglass
  • Test your hour glass with the batteries
  • Create a box from the CNC machine; make sure to sand rough edges
  • Put the hour glass in the box using hot glue as an adhesive

The standards I met include:

  • innovating through finding and organizing existing projects,
  • exploring by designing experiments to fix problems the project had,
  • planing through making technical plans in my engineering notebook,
  • designing by making design choices that both accomplish technical function with aesthetic consideration in my vinyl project,
  • making through safely efficiently and purposefully making my items,
  • crafting by using materials that are purpose appropriate,
  • testing with troubleshooting the soldering project,
  • evaluating by giving advice to others who presented,
  • sharing with sharing my projects in front of the class, and finally
  • engaging by being a good teem member and managing my time well in class and staying focused on the work at hand.
